Welcome Back to School!! |
|
We believe Moanalua Elementary is a school community where everyone works together to provide an environment that nurtures and develops the whole child. Moanalua Elementary School is a place where everyone is valued and can make a positive contribution. Our school-community shares the responsibility for providing a dynamic environment that develops knowledgeable, skillful, accountable and caring individuals. In this age of information, web sites are on a dramatic world-wide increase. At MES, we are also using this medium to share with you the current status of Standards-based curriculum, instruction and assessment; quality student support and parent involvement at MES. We are looking forward in the near future to include more features in this web site that will enhance these three school priorities. |

We hope everyone had an enjoyable Fall Break and is refreshed and ready to return to school! There are many exciting activities and events planned this quarter which will unite our students, parents, faculty, staff and community. The main event our students look forward to is the MES Fun Fair, a fund raiser carnival held on the school grounds. This annual event would not be possible without the cooperation of the PTO, school and community. Be on the lookout for more information on this exciting event! |

Achieve 3000 Did you know? On average, children begin at age 2 with a vocabulary of 200 words, and then learn about five new words a day. This means that a six-year-old will typically have acquired more than 7,500 words (this can range from 5,000-20,000 words). Children will read more that 100,000 words throughout their school years.

Achieve3000 Tips
As we begin the 2011-2012 school year, now is a great time to encourage your child to read more about topics that are of interest to him/her. Reading helps build vocabulary—and a rich vocabulary is crucial to your child’s success in school and on state tests. Did you know? On average, children begin at age 2 with a vocabulary of 200 words, and then learn about five new words a day. This means that a six-year-old child will typically have acquired more than 7,500 words (this can range from 5,000-20,000 words). Children will read more that 100,000 words throughout their school years. At school, Achieve3000 is helping your child learn new vocabulary—and you can help build your child’s vocabulary at home. Here’s one idea for how to make vocabulary a fun part of your day: Elementary School Students: Hold a weekly “Word Work Out.” Have family members take turns selecting a new word for the whole family to learn. Post the word on the refrigerator, and use the word in conversations or in games. See who can use the word most often! Secondary School Students: Hold a weekly “Word Challenge.” Have your teen find new words to “challenge” you with—and see if YOU know the meaning. Keep track of how many times your child stumps you!
